Can I Wear Sunglasses in the Winter?

When temperatures drop and snow blankets the ground, sunglasses may not top your list of winter accessories—but they should. Many associate sunglasses with blazing summer heat, but they are just as vital during the colder months. So, you should wear sunglasses in the winter to protect your eyes from the sun’s potential harm when doing anything outdoors.

Your choice of sunglasses is still important regardless of the season. You should always consult your eye doctor if unsure which sunglasses best suit your needs. Generally, sunglasses with polarized lenses that offer “UVA/UVB” or “100% UV protection” are excellent choices.

Is UV Radiation Still a Threat in Winter?

One of the biggest myths about UV exposure is that it only happens in the summer. But the reality is that UV radiation doesn’t hibernate when the temperatures drop. Harmful ultraviolet rays can still cause damage to your eyes regardless of the season.

Even on overcast days, up to 90% of UV rays can penetrate through cloud cover. This means your eyes remain at risk of harmful radiation that contributes to conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration, regardless of whether it’s “sunny” or not.

How Snow & Ice Affect UV Reflection

Winter also brings another challenge for your eyes—a natural mirror. Snow and ice reflect UV rays, amplifying your exposure. Believe it or not, snow and ice can double your UV exposure compared to other surfaces like water. Add the low angle of the sun during winter, and sunlight reaches your eyes from all angles—not just from above but also below.

This intense double-exposure effect, coupled with the dazzling glare from snow, can strain your eyes and even lead to temporary conditions like snow blindness.

Why Sunglasses Are Essential in Winter

A few reasons make sunglasses an essential component of your eye safety in the winter.

Protecting Your Eye Health

UV radiation can cause serious damage to your eyes over time. Sunglasses can shield your eyes from harmful UV rays and safeguard your long-term eye health. Consistent protection helps reduce the risk of conditions like snow blindness, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

Don’t forget—you’re protecting more than your eyes. Your eyelids and the delicate skin around your eyes are also vulnerable to UV rays. Quality sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays can provide comprehensive protection.

Reducing Glare & Improving Vision

Have you ever squinted uncontrollably while driving on a bright winter morning? That’s glare at work. Glare on snowy surfaces can impair your vision and even lead to dangerous situations, especially while driving or skiing.

Polarized sunglasses can be a game-changer. They reduce reflective glare, making it easier to see clearly and comfortably in bright winter conditions. Sunglasses enhance visual acuity and comfort when you’re on the slopes, hiking a snowy trail, or navigating icy roads.

Choosing the Right Winter Sunglasses

When it comes to winter eyewear, not all sunglasses are created equal. Here’s what to consider when choosing a pair that’s up to the task:

  • UV protection: Look for lenses offering 100% UVA and UVB protection. This is a non-negotiable safeguard for your eye health.
  • Polarized lenses: Polarized lenses are your best bet in preventing glare and offering clear vision, especially for snowy or icy landscapes.
  • Wraparound frames: A wraparound frame provides extra protection by preventing light from sneaking in through the sides.
  • Impact resistance: Outdoor enthusiasts should opt for durable lenses that can withstand active use in winter sports.

Tips for Wearing Sunglasses in Winter

Your eye doctor can help you choose the right sunglasses for your needs, but here are a few tips for their effective use:

  • Driving: Winter roads are no match for polarized sunglasses, which can cut through glaring reflections on icy patches.
  • Outdoor activities: Whether skiing, snowboarding, or simply walking your dog, sunglasses are essential for protecting your eyes.
  • Everyday errands: Think grocery runs and outdoor shopping—cloudy skies don’t mean there’s no UV risk. Wearing suitable sunglasses whenever you’re doing anything outdoors is a good habit to create.
