When Do I Need an Eye Exam?
For adults between 20 and 64, we generally recommend an exam at least every 2 years. Vision can change gradually over time, and eye diseases like glaucoma can develop without noticeable symptoms. Routine eye exams help us catch health problems and vision changes earlier.
For adults 65 and older, we recommend yearly eye exams. As we age, our eyes become more susceptible to certain conditions. Age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy (if you have diabetes) are all more common in older adults.
Regular exams allow us to detect these changes and conditions when treatments are more effective. Different factors can influence your exam schedule, but Dr. Fernick and the rest of our team can help determine the best eye exam schedule for your needs!

Advanced Technology for Eye Care
We incorporate innovative eye care technology into our eye exams to help provide high-quality eye care and diagnostics.
Advanced Retinal Imaging
Our team uses advanced retinal imaging in our eye exams to capture, examine, and review images of the back of your eyes. Advanced retinal imaging can help alert our team of potential health risks and help us prepare a personalized treatment plan.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
OCT is a noninvasive imaging technology that we use to capture high-resolution cross-sectional 3D images of your retina. The scan uses light waves that allow us to see the back of the eye, similar to how an ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image.
With an OCT scan, we can map and measure the retina’s layers, providing detailed insights into your eye tissue, blood vessels, and nerve fibers. This comprehensive information helps us to detect and treat eye diseases in their early stages. For more information, please visit our technology page!
What Happens During an OCT Scan?
Preparing for your OCT scan is easy. You’ll be comfortably seated and rest your chin on the support attached to the device.
The OCT will scan each eye individually as you focus on a green target within the machine. While the scan is in progress, you might catch a glimpse of a red line, but nothing will touch your eye.
The entire process will only take a few minutes.
What Conditions Can OCT Detect?
OCT is a powerful tool that can help us detect a variety of eye diseases and conditions by precisely mapping intricate details of the eye tissue and vessels at the back of your eye. Moreover, OCT is frequently used to evaluate the optic nerve, a bundle of fibers that carry visual signals from your eye to your brain.
Some of the conditions that OCT can assist us in diagnosing include:
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Macular edema
- Macular degeneration
